Assets Based Approaches
Assets Based Approaches
Traditional approaches to improving population health focus on a deficit model where problems and needs are identified such as illnesses, health harming behaviours or deprivation. Responding to these issues typically focuses on curative care and welfare systems. Although addressing problems and needs is important, population health and health inequalities are strongly influenced by socio-economic and environmental factors. A broader assets based approach is therefore needed which aims it identify, promote and strengthen factors which protect and support good health. An assets based approach focuses on creating health rather than fixing it and empowers individuals and communities (Bortel, Wickramasinghe, Morgan & Martin, 2019)
