All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme takes next step forward

In March 2021, Welsh Government announced funding for an All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme (AWDPP), which is being led by Public Health Wales.

This national programme, which will contribute to the implementation of the Healthy Weight, Healthy Wales Delivery Plan, will see healthcare practitioners deliver a brief intervention to people who have been identified as being at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The AWDPP will be delivered through a phased rollout with embedded evaluation to support the development of an evidence-based programme.

The report, ‘Developing the Intervention for the All Wales Diabetes Prevention Programme’, outlines the AWDPP intervention design, the key elements of work which underpin it, and the rigour of the process undertaken to arrive at this design. The AWDPP builds on approaches that were piloted and evaluated in two separate primary care clusters, Afan Valley and North Ceredigion.
