Brain Health and Dementia Risk Reduction – How can we affect change?

Thursday 17th July 2025
With Public Health Network Cymru

There is limited public awareness of the risk factors that contribute to dementia, despite growing evidence that around 45% of cases are linked to modifiable factors such as hearing loss, smoking, inactivity, and cardiovascular health. Prevention is both possible and powerful. Targeted outreach is needed for diverse communities, while addressing stigma and fear around diagnosis. Although dementia is one of our greatest health challenges, it remains low on the public agenda—underscoring the need for urgent, equitable, and prevention-focused action across the system.

Learning Outcomes of this webinar

  • Knowledge of 14 modifiable risk factors that at population level could reduce future dementia cases by up to 45%
  • That it is never too early and never too late to take action to improve brain health
  • Knowledge of the Prevention Based Health Care Framework for Wales

  • Examples of brain health/dementia risk reduction services/interventions being delivered in Wales
