Human health and well-being are intimately linked to the state of the environment. Good quality natural environments provide a number of basic needs including clean air and water, fertile land for food production, and energy and material inputs for producing goods and services. Green infrastructure also serves to regulate climate and prevent flooding. Access to green spaces such as forests, parks and gardens and blue spaces including rivers, canals and the sea provides important opportunities for recreation and supports well-being.   At the same time, the environment represents an important pathway for human exposure to polluted air, noise and hazardous chemicals. (European Environment Agency, 2021). For example, in Wales it is estimated that the long-term burden of air pollution exposure to be the equivalent of between 1,400 and 1,600 deaths per year (Public Health Wales, 2020).
