MI is both a person-centred AND directional approach. More than a ‘technique’ with associated ‘tools’ to use, and unlike a more ‘prescriptive’ approach, working motivationally is a way of being with people that enhances their own motivation for change. In child and family settings this approach can guide workers to have more productive conversations with family members which can contribute to the safety and well-being of children and the whole family.
