School Food Environments to Shape Healthier Futures: Sharing Learning from Evidence to Action

Have you wondered what the latest evidence says about the role school food can have in shaping a child’s health and wellbeing?  And how, in Wales, we can maximise opportunities in the school food environment for the benefit of population health and well-being now and in the future?

This timely webinar coincides with a Welsh Government Consultation ‘Healthy eating and drinking in maintained schools in Wales’.

The webinar provided an overview of the potential impact that the school food environment has on health and wellbeing of children, adults and society, describing perspectives on some of the challenges and opportunities in creating healthier school food environments.

It covered:

• A public health nutrition perspective on the proposed updated food and nutrition standards
• How to shape whole-school approaches to food and nutrition
• The importance of involving children, families and professionals with a role to play in school food environments
• Ways to improve implementation and monitoring to support healthier school food environments.

Learning Outcomes:

• Provide an overview of the potential short, medium and long term impact of the school food environment on health and wellbeing of children.
• Improve knowledge of the opportunity that the ‘Healthy eating and drinking in maintained schools in Wales’ Consultation brings, including to reflect the most up to date scientific evidence on nutrition and health.
• Share understanding of the potential challenges and solutions involved in creating healthy school food environments.
• Hear practical examples of some of the different approaches being taken forward in Wales to improve health and well-being through the school food environment.
• Know how to access further information.
