Adversity and Health in Later Life: Insights from Research in Wales

Wales is committed to creating an age-friendly society where people of all ages are valued and can live and age well. Preventing adversity in later life that can harm health and well-being is central to this commitment and essential to enhancing the societal benefits of an increasing older population.

This webinar highlighted the impacts of later life adversity on older people’s health and well-being, presenting key findings from recent studies undertaken by Public Health Wales. These included:

  • A national population survey of adults aged 60+ exploring exposure to adverse experiences including abuse, poverty and loneliness and social isolation and their impact on health and wellbeing
  • Home temperature monitoring and interviews with residents examining the impact of cold homes on health and wellbeing
  • A synthesis of knowledge and practice on social isolation, loneliness and social connection in Wales
