Although the proportion of the population of smokers has declined in Wales, just under 1 in 4 (18%) of the adult population still smoke and those people living in the most disadvantaged communities are over twice as likely to smoke (StatsWales, 2020). Smoking still accounts for over 5000 deaths per year in Wales (Public Health Wales, 2021 and increases the risk of a number of diseases including lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and coronary heart disease. The continued use of tobacco places a significant burden on the NHS and wider economy. In Wales smokers can obtain free support to quit from the NHS Help Me Quit service.
